To the Editor:
At last there is a slender ray of hope for Mother Earth: a lawsuit has been filed against the Pinelands Commission (PC) and the Board of Public Utilities (BPU).
I don’t believe that ordinary citizens who support the South Jersey Gas pipeline through the pinelands realize how dangerously close to the point of no return on the escalating greenhouse gases the Earth is to irreversible, calamitous climate change.
The BPU Commissioners don’t seem to care about the rapidly-approaching, catastrophic climate change as their mandate is serving the fossil fuel interests.
The PC is a deeply divided group as to whom they serve: their oath of office to protect the Comprehensive Management Plan vs. their political masters (Christie, Sweeney, Norcross).
There is a clear danger to our planet being ignored by both commissions. Leaking (of methane) during the fracking process releases into the atmosphere enough methane to make its warming impact, comparable to that of burning coal.
Cornell Professor Anthony Ingraffa coauthored the study on methane leakage and describes himself as “a long-time oil and gas engineer who helped develop shale fracking techniques for the Energy Department,” in an Op-ed in The New York Times. He wrote, “The gas extracted from shale deposits is not a ‘bridge’ to a renewable energy future, it’s a gangplank to more warming and away from clean energy investments.”
For the sake of Mother Earth, our future generations and ourselves, may the lawsuit of the Sierra Club and Environment New Jersey receive justice in this morally-challenged time.
God willing the ethical indifference infecting the BPU and some members of the PC has not infected the Judiciary. If not, justice will be served and the Pinelands protected.
