To the Editor:
What does Herald Publisher Art Hall need to see before he can believe that man is seriously contributing to the greenhouse effect and global warming? A polar bear on a runaway iceberg float by his office window at the Herald?
The overwhelming evidence is in and has been in, with 97 percent of the world’s scientists agreeing that, yes, fossil fuels; coal, gas and oil have been emitting harmful gases, namely carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere for decades, exacerbating a global warming trend.
There are so many red herrings to the conservative think-tank-endorsed, anti-climate warming campaign, that there’s not enough space in this letter forum to expound fully.
Just some brief facts: Conservatives, at the behest of their think tanks, do the bidding for the fossil-fuels industry. That industry spent $493 million on lobbying the 113th Congress in 2013 and 2014. The fossil fuels industry also spent $84 million on the 2014 elections to get their puppet politicians elected to Congress.
Of the $64 million that went directly to candidates and parties, nearly 80 percent of those millions of dollars went to Republicans.
So, what does that tell you? The fossil-fuels industry doesn’t give a rat’s tail that they are poisoning our atmosphere, leading to the melting of artic ice, the rising of the sea level, a marked increase in severe storms, unprecedented drought and flooding.
Most importantly to note, it’s the dangerous methane gas trapped in the arctic ice that is being released into the atmosphere this moment that perhaps is the greatest threat of all. It’s only going to get worse as that methane exponentially increases the greenhouse effect.
The future of our children and grandchildren are at stake.
