Highway Signs are Being Misused

Letters to the Editor 2019

By John Curtis, Court House

To the Editor:

Over the past few days, I have noticed a large electronic sign on Stone Harbor Boulevard flashing a notice about offshore wind farms. I have heard reports about similar signs near Wildwood and Cape May.

These signs usually show important traffic or road condition information, often warning truckers about bridge weight limits. How is it that they’re being used to promote a political opinion?

While there’s no doubt that we have to do as much as we can to mitigate the effects of climate change, especially to save coastal communities like ours, there can still be a debate about the advantages and disadvantages of wind power.

The county’s website links to a scholarly article, which lists pros and cons, but cherry-picks only the negative aspects of wind. They leave out quotes from the article, such as, “Wind beats coal by any environmental measure” and “wind power is enormously cleaner than coal or gas.”

Let’s have the debate without having the county use public resources to sway public opinion and possibly compromise public safety.
