Gun Control is Not the Answer

By Pat McGlinn, North Cape May

To the Editor:
Gun control isn’t the answer to stop violence.
After another tragic school shooting, the people are outraged about guns. We are hearing angry words, demonstrations demanding banning guns, and protests for Congress to act.
Did one ever stop to wonder how these ideas get into the heads of the shooters? When we were kids, we had cap guns and gleefully shot at bad men on television. My generation did not wind up going into a school and killing as many people as they could, or shooting innocent children as they play on the sidewalk.
I believe violence in movies and, especially video games, and on the internet, play a big part in encouraging these killers to act. One can learn how to do anything on the internet. A video game is constantly projecting violence and putting fancy guns into the hands of the participants of the game.
As young children, this generation has been surfing the internet and playing games depicting war, zombies, extraterrestrials, and all sorts of evil. These games demonstrate how to defeat the enemy by using violence.
Years ago, Tipper Gore tried to fight the violence shown in these video games. Today, she continues to voice strong opinions on this topic and the profanity used in much of the music the younger generation is listening to.
Even most of the shows on television are staged around war or violence in the street. We are constantly seeing gang wars, drug wars, and people dying. There are very few shows that tickle the funny bone or show a way of life that doesn’t include viciousness and loss of life.
While guns are the weapon of choice when these events occur, look deeper and find where the seeds of violence were planted.
