Guardian Angels Still Look Out for Us

By Miller

To The Editor:
I got caught in a strange situation the night of Feb 22. As I was leaving Cape Regional Medical Center after having my daughter admitted at the emergency room, I departed for the parking lot. My worst time with walking is at night, and I only had my walking stick with me.
As I went out to the parking lot it was dark and raining, two ideal conditions for me to fall on my keester. I spotted an opening in the snowdrifts between the rows of cars and thought I could make it through to get to my car. Alas, the opening was covered by an invisible three-inch-deep puddle of water, so there I was standing in a puddle of water with nothing substantial to latch onto to maintain my balance. Stick was not enough.
At that time, a lady came out and went to her car. I called to her and asked for her help. Picture this: a call for assistance on a dark rainy night with no one around. This lady, without hesitation, headed for me and seeing my plight had to laugh and asked “What are you doing in there on a night like tonight?” I said it was sheer stupidity. But, she kept on coming, got a hold of me, she also, standing in the water, and led me safely out of my predicament.
When we were on solid pavement, she asked where my car was, and with an authoritative voice told me to stay put, asked for my keys and was off to retrieve my car. When she brought the car around, I had to walk around the front to the driver’s side. My vision was dulled by the glare of the headlights and when I approached the door voicing my thanks, I saw she was not there. I looked around and spotted her form disappearing in the dim light toward her car. I yelled my thanks and she acknowledged with a little wave. Because of this courageous and gracious lady’s kindness, I made it home in good condition.
So, if she reads this letter, I thank her for what she did that night. It appears that Guardian Angels still look to the welfare of us knuckleheads.
