To the Editor:
In response to a letter in the Aug. 5 Herald: My first reaction was an emotional one but I decided to take the high road instead. Planned Parenthood is the largest U.S. provider of reproductive health services, with 97 percent of its services focused on breast and cervical cancer screening, HIV screening, counseling, contraception and 3 percent on abortion. Federal money is not used to fund abortion services.
The surreptitiously filmed videos do not show that Planned Parenthood sells fetal tissue for profit, which is against the law.
Fetal tissue is used for research primarily to find treatments for sick babies and research to find cures for other diseases, like Parkinson’s. Fetal tissue can only be used with the consent of the woman having the abortion.
Anti-abortion activists and misguided citizens are out in full force to deny reproductive rights to women.
Planned Parenthood has received federal funding since 1970, when President Nixon signed into law the Family Planning Services Act, providing funding for family-funding services, including contraception.
Funding also comes from private donors, with a membership base of over 700,000 active donors.
According to its own estimates, its contraceptive services prevent approximately 612,000 unintended pregnancies and 219,000 abortions annually.
Now, you have the facts.
Unfortunately, denying women’s right to healthcare has been high on the agenda of the majority party of both houses of Congress for many years, including shutting down the government in 2011.
I am hoping that saner voices will prevail in the coming weeks.
