The more I am exposed to the troubles of the nations of the world, the more gratitude I feel for America, and the more gratitude I feel for George Washington, the one we call the father of our country. The birthday of this incredibly selfless man is coming Feb. 22. In his honor, I’d like to share with you some of the notable things he said. Please consider sharing them:
• (He is not usually witty; this one is funny, however) – Few men have virtue enough to withstand the highest bidder.
• I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.
• If this nation expects to be ignorant and free it expects what never was and what will never be.
• If we desire to secure peace… we are at all times (to be) ready for war.
• My first wish is to see this plague of mankind, war, banished from the earth.
• (Do we owe our government service, or do we look for it to serve us?) – Every citizen who enjoys the protection of a free government owes not only a portion of his property but even of his personal services to the defense of it.
• I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education which I received from my mother.
• Whenever one person is found adequate to the discharge of a duty… it is worse executed by two persons, and scarcely done at all if three or more are employed therein.
• Occupants of public offices love power and are prone to abuse it.
• The foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing is a vice so mean and low that every person of sense and character detests and despises it.
• The marvel of all history is the patience with which men and women submit to burdens unnecessarily laid upon them by their governments.
• (The nation) ought to be considered as a main prop of your liberty, and that the love of the one ought to endear to you the preservation of the other.
• Distrust the patriotism of those who in any quarter may endeavor to weaken (the national unity).
• The right of the people to establish government presupposes the duty of every individual to obey the established government.
• The common and continual mischiefs of… (political parties) enfeeble the public administration.
• Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness.
With such great people as this man, it is little wonder we are so blessed.
Lower Township – Who are these people that are obvious experts on trash cans and leaf pick-up? Maybe they don't have any trash to put out or leaves in their yard!!
