Cape Issues – Adjusting Taxes to Financial Realities

By Art Hall

If you are like most of us, you are have had to adjust your spending to bring it in line with what I heard someone describe lately as the “new normal.”
One man told me that he and his family have been looking forward to a cruise, but that is now out of the question. Another said she is no longer considering far-away colleges for her children, and has told them they will be attending Atlantic Cape Community College.
As I chat with business people in our region, it is not uncommon to hear them state that their income is off 40 percent. When I told a barber that was what I was hearing, he said, “I guess I’m lucky; mine is not down that much.”
For those of you who have been following the Cape Issues, you know that we are a non-partisan group of citizens who are working to bring the tax burden on the citizens into line with what is now the “new normal.”
The challenge before us all is to do so in a prudent way which results in efficiently providing only necessary high quality public services, as well as fair and reasonable salaries and benefits for employees. Government services that can be scaled back or eliminated should be identified.
Please contact any of us. We welcome all your suggestions or your assistance.
