To the Editor:
Regarding the Ocean City School Board members (Herald 3/13) feeling threatened by the “Freedom To Read Act,” I understand. Parents worry about their children.
Some of these folks worry about what their kids may be exposed to in the library. However, what their children can be and are exposed to via social media and their peer group should dwarf their concerns.
If your child independently picks up a book, you are blessed. Hardly anyone reads voluntarily unless it’s a two-sentence tweet or put-down.
I agree with the state’s need to set “uniformed guidelines to evaluate book challenges” – otherwise why not ban “Romeo and Juliet” as it promotes suicide and underage sex.
Referring to the act as the “Freedom to Groom Act” speaks more to the prurient interests of the author of this statement. Why is that the first thing that comes to mind?
Protecting librarians and allowing them to sue those who harass them preserves the opportunity to learn from entering a fatal deep freeze.
When Cesar attacked Egypt in 48 BCE, he set fire to the library in Alexandria. This sufficiently diverted the Egyptian troops enough to allow Rome to conquer Egypt.
