Ocean City Reopens Aquatic & Fitness Center Pool

The pool was closed for two months to undergo upgrades but is open to the public once again.

From Doug Bergen with Ocean City

The 25-meter pool at the Ocean City Aquatic & Fitness Center reopened on Monday after a two-month repair and renovation project.

Ocean City, Cape May County and state officials and pool members held a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony, and seniors in a water exercise class became the first to use the pool since work began on Aug. 5.

The failure of a main drainage pipeline beneath the pool necessitated the project, but the city took the opportunity to replaster the entire pool, install tiled lane markers and redeck the area around the pool with a new soft rubber surface.

“So many different people take advantage of this great community resource,” Mayor Jay Gillian said. “It’s important to maintain it for generations to come.”

The pool serves users of all ages and hosts programs for swimming lessons, a youth swim team, the Ocean City High School varsity teams, adult lap swimmers, adults with spinal cord injuries/disease, Special Olympics, senior exercise programs, scuba lessons, among other activities. Members check in to the facility more than 100,000 times each year.

The approximately $792,000 renovation contract was completed by Capri Construction of Vineland.

Installation of pool amenities will complete the project in the coming week. More information on Aquatic & Fitness Center programs and memberships is available at www.ocnj.us/AquaticFitnessCenter.
