Ocean City Aerobatic Airshow Performed Over High Surf, Dangerous RIP Currents

By Herald Staff

OCEAN CITY– As Hurricane Igor approaches the island of Bermuda over 700 miles away aviators kicked off the third annual Boardwalk Aerobatic Airshow over the beach of Ocean City, Sunday afternoon.
Pilots performed death defying acts over the high surf and dangerous rip currents, a result of distant Hurricane Igor.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew from station Atlantic City, scheduled in the airshow for a swimmer rescue demonstration did not send their rescue swimmer into the water due to the swells estimated to be in the 4 to 8 feet range by the National Weather Service early Sunday afternoon. The helicopter simulated a search and rescue mission by maneuvering close to the water.
The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory which is effect until Midnight, Monday night.
Surf heights may occasionally exceed 10 feet by Monday, according to a report by the National Weather Service.
This year’s Air Show featured many top-rated aerobatic stunt pilots including Mike Wiskus in the LUCAS Oil Pitts, Kendal Simpson in a Pitts Model 12, Charlie Schwenker in the Extra 300, the Red Star Raiders Formation Team, fly bys from McGuire AFB’s C-17A Globemaster III, a USCG Search and Rescue Demonstration and the USAF F-16CJ Viper East Coast Demonstration Team and others.
