Lightning Hits Transformer; Power Out in Wide Area

By Al Campbell

WOODBINE — At about 7:45 p.m. Aug. 10, lightning struck an electrical transformer near Route 550 and County Route 610.
Herald photojournalist Harry Scheeler Jr. saw the strike, which he described as “The sky lit up in a brilliant yellow.”
After that, electricity was out in Woodbine as well as in parts of Upper and Dennis townships.
Atlantic City Electric crews responded to the scene, but power is expected to be out for at least several hours.
Because there was no power, traffic signals were inoperative, and county Fire Police were summoned to help direct traffic at key intersections.
