Another monster fall storm predicted to envelope the whole eastern seacoast brought out the cameras and cellphones by the hundreds to record the fury of Sandy. The name is too friendly to be given to a weather system that threatens to engulf folks as far west as Ohio, but Sandy she is and at this time there is still the possibility she may be as tame as her name.
Driving north through the Wildwoods, there was no “Calm before the storm.” People were busily battening down and boarding up. Many plywood window coverings bore the name of the last year’s storm, Irene, with Sandy inscribed on top. There were cars parked on high ground to protect them from the already swollen tides at 7:40 this morning. Businesses were closed and there was the activity of preparing to “Get out of Dodge” or “Ride it out.”
Further north in Stone Harbor and Avalon the lovely fall Halloween decorations were taking a windy beating and no one was around to enjoy them except for those still engaged in pre-storm tying down.
We could not go north to Sea Isle City as the road was closed by the police, so we circled back by the parkway and then headed southward on Route 9. The difference between the barrier islands and “off shore” was palpable. It seemed to be “business as usual” all the way from Court House to Rio Grande.
So, Sandy, please Go Home.
