PETERSBURG – Upper Township Committee overhauled its flood damage control regulations in order to comply with the National Flood Insurance Program.
At its Nov.14 meeting, the committee addressed some of the existing regulations regarding special flood hazard areas within the township, as identified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These areas might be subject to periodic inundation that could result in loss of life and property and represent potential health and safety hazards, as well as be areas where the township would have to spend significant amounts of public money for flood protection.
According to the text of the ordinance, Upper Township was first accepted for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program in December 1976 and as it “desires to continue to meet the requirements of the program” it is undertaking revision of certain provisions that apply to the design and construction for buildings and structures in flood hazard areas.
