WILDWOOD – After more than two decades in storage, Wildwood’s Trolley No. 20 took a ride to Iowa to be restored.
On April 1, the dilapidated 1913 trolley was pulled by forklift out of the former Atlantic City Electric substation on New Jersey Avenue, where it had been entombed since 1994.
According to Bill McKelvey, chairman of Liberty Historic Railway (LHRy), the Berkeley Heights nonprofit that is funding the restoration, there were three inches to spare on each side of the trolley as it passed through the building’s doorway.
The following day (April 2), Dailey Trucking of Carlisle, Pa. picked up the 18,000-pound trolley to drive it to Iowa, where it will be restored by Gomaco Trolley Company. The trolley arrived in Iowa April 5, according to Jeff Lawhead of Gomaco.
Wildwood’s Trolley Restoration Project deeded the trolley to LHRy in January, but they had to wait for snow season to end in the Midwest before beginning the move. At that time, McKelvey said he was not sure how long the restoration would take, but he told Gomaco to take their time while LHRy decides on a destination for the restored trolley.
