WILDWOOD – An anonymous donor has given $300,000 to Liberty Historic Railway (LHRy) toward the restoration of Wildwood Trolley No. 20. According to LHRy Chairman Bill McKelvey, the trolley is estimated to cost $500,000 to restore. LHRy, a nonprofit which preserves artifacts of New Jersey transportation history, plans to run the restored trolley in Boonton, Morris County.
“The donor requests that their funds be applied to the restoration of the Wildwood open trolley car No. 20, and toward the LHRy effort to establish an operating Transportation Heritage Center in Boonton’s Grace Lord Park,” reads a statement on LHRy.org.
“Specifically, the donor would like to see the Rockaway River Bridge restored for rail and trail use; track restored in the Park for operation of historic trolley cars; and the acquisition and adaptive reuse of the abandoned warehouse in the Park to showcase the trolley cars and other transportation-related exhibits, including canal, bus, truck, military vehicle, fire truck, taxi, etc.”
The Wildwood Trolley Restoration Project, which formed in the early 1990s, gave the 1913 trolley to the nonprofit LHRy earlier in January 2018 because the owner of the building where the trolley has been stored is planning to sell the property.
