Special guest at Humane Society bash

By On Deck Staff

The Ocean City Humane Society is hosting a birthday party for its many residents—dogs and cats patiently waiting to be adopted by attentive best friends.
A no kill shelter, the Society has decided to celebrate all of its animals’ birthdays on Sat., Jan. 10 from noon till 2 p.m. at the award winning facility located on 1 Shelter Rd., off Bay and Tennessee avenues.
Grown-ups, children, and their pets are all invited. Visitors should bring their cameras, because there will be a special guest.
It will be a bona fide canine celebrity: Elwood, winner of the 2007 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest.
Elwood is a Chinese Crested Chihuahua mixed breed living in Sewell with Karen Quigley. Elwood won the title at the Colleseum in Petaluma, CA, trotting away with the crown and a $1,000 cash prize.
Most of the competition winners have been of Elwood’s breed, distinguished, “by exaggerated traits like a Mohawk, bug eyes and a long, wagging tongue.”
“The party will feature favors, birthday goodies, beverages and lots of good wishes and warmth for the animals, their caregivers and all guests,” noted shelter volunteer, Nancy Waddell, who, with her husband Dick, have adopted numerous Greyhounds.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for children to become acquainted with our four footed residents and learn about the work we do,” said Waddell. “Elwood will be on hand to remind us all that it’s okay to be different, and that even if only one someone loves you, you’ll always have a home in their heart.”
An RSVP would be appreciated. Please contact Waddell at 609-398-7484 or email dwaddell1@verizon.net.
