CREST HAVEN – Cape May County Fire Marshal Conrad Johnson accepted 350-360 smoke detectors from Veronica “Ronnie” Town, senior public affairs manager, Atlantic City Electric (ACE), during the Oct. 22 freeholder caucus meeting.
The smoke detectors would be distributed throughout the county, according to Johnson.
He said this was about the 20th year that ACE has donated smoke detectors to the county. He estimated that during that time, roughly 7,000 smoke detectors have been received for county residents.
Residents are asked to go to their local fire departments or fire prevention bureaus to get the devices, explained Johnson. He said that most fire departments would help residents install them.
All county fire departments keep the devices on their first engines, said Johnson, “so that if they get to a scene and someone doesn’t have one, they won’t leave a property without a working smoke detector.”
“We appreciate the relationships we have with our emergency folks here,” said Town. “Every day, we have emergencies, whether it’s a transformer fire or a wire down, we have the fire department there to help us, and this is a way we feel we give back to the community.”
She said that ACE distributed 2,800 smoke detectors in eight counties in 2019, and over 41,000 since 2000.
“You gave out 41,000 (smoke detectors), which means you protected 41,000 homes, and the residents of those homes, and I think that’s significant,” said Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton. “Job well done.”
