Site Cleared for Post Office

George Henry White Memorial is undisturbed by post office site layout.

By Vince Conti

WHITESBORO – The site for the new Whitesboro Post Office has been cleared and marked out.
The location, at the northeast corner of Route 9 and Main Street, is also the home of the George Henry White Memorial and a nearby New Jersey Transit bus stop. Neither the memorial nor the bus stop is impacted by the site layout, which curves at the corner to allow the memorial to go undisturbed.
There is an effort underway to have the facility named after White, an African American from North Carolina, who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives during Reconstruction. He was also a co-founder of Whitesboro.
After White left office, no African American served in Congress until 1929, and none were elected from North Carolina until 1992.
