Shell Show at Wetlands Institute

The Jersey Cape Shell Club hosts its 34th Anniversary Shell Show Friday, Sat-urday, and Sunday, August 15-17 at the Wetlands Institute on Stone Harbor Boulevard from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
Admission is adults $2, children free.
On display are competitive scientific and artistic exhibits with ribbons and trophies awarded.
The show chair is Karen Lelli of Vine-land.
Paul Callamon of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences is judge for the scientific displays, and Eliza Dietz, BFA, University of the Fine Arts is the artistic judge.
Activities include: free Kidscraft from noon to 2 p.m. each day, and visitors may compete for a prize by bringing the largest clam, oyster, whelk, or moon shell to compare with the club’s stan-dard shell.
On sale are raffle tickets, hand-made items from the “Crafty Ladies,” and beautiful shell-related crafts and gifts, specimen shells, and original jewelry.
During August, shells will be show-cased at the Cape May County Library, Cape May Court House. For Information call the Wetlands Institute at 609-368-1211.
Meetings are held at the Wetlands In-stitute, at 7:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month through November. If the day is a holiday, the meeting is on the following Monday.
Scheduled meetings are as follows:
Aug. 4: Speaker is Eleanor Bochenek, marine scientist with Rutgers Univer-sity’s Haskin Shellfish Research Labora-tory. Her topic is surf and quahog clams with environmental issues, including global warming.
Sept. 8: Tentatively scheduled are two DVD presentations by Joyce Matthys.
One, entitled Mollusks in Action, is a 30-minute film. Or perhaps Tom Grace may speak, now that he has returned from the western wilds and is finally back on the east coast.
Oct. 6: Dr. Robert Robertson, of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Phila-delphia will be our speaker.
Nov. 3: TBA.

The Jersey Cape Shell Club is now listed as a provider in the New Jersey Department of Education Professional Development Provider system on the Internet at state.nj.us/education.
Teachers may attend our monthly meeting and have the lecturer sign the certificate (provided by their school dis-trict) or one that our club provides to receive credit for required Professional Development hours.
