OCEAN CITY — Republican Gary Schaffer on Sept. 12 announced in a release that he received the endorsement of the Cape May County Fire Chief’s Association and the Cape May County Chiefs of Police Association in his bid for the Sheriff’s seat.
In their endorsement, the Cape May County Fire Chiefs’ pointed to “Schaffer’s vision, ability and proven leadership in getting things done as the Director of the Cape May County Public Safety Training Center.”
They further identified his “extensive background and solid working relationships with public safety professionals throughout the county as his core strength in making him the strongest and best candidate for Sheriff.”
The Cape May County Chiefs of Police Association also cited Schaffer’s 35 years in law enforcement in Cape May County “as well as his accomplishments as the director of the county’s Public Safety Training Center” as primary reasons for their support. They “specifically applauded Schaffer’s achievement in taking a mere range facility with classrooms, a fire tower and smoke house and making it a state-of-the-art Police and Fire Training Center that has provided training to every law enforcement officer in the county.”
The chiefs concluded that “Schaffer’s working experience with the law enforcement professionals in the county would establish an unprecedented relationship with the Sheriff’s office and local police departments that would be an invaluable asset to the public.”
“Since announcing my candidacy for Sheriff, I have received encouragement from various groups. But I am especially thrilled with the overwhelming support from the chief executives and my peers in the law enforcement and fire fighter professions. Having them think I am the best person for the office is most important to me,” Schaffer concluded.
