RIO GRANDE – Jan. 3 marked the first day of the 116th Congress.
According to a release, the Cape May County Indivisible, a local political activism group, held a roadside rally on the southwest corner of Routes 9 and 47.
A group of 12 residents lined the corner, holding signs and chanting “Whose House? Our House!” Their signs demanded an end to the government shut down, opposed funding for the border wall, and supported democracy reform legislation. Cars honked as they passed, and the group would cheer and wave.
“We’re mostly getting a positive response.” stated Sandy Gatelein of Wildwood, who held a sign that read “All Eyes on You Van Drew.”
“We wanted to send a clear message to our new congressman that we are here, we are paying attention, and we will hold him accountable,” Jeremiah Schenerman of Wildwood commented.
“It’s also a message to the community; we want to show Cape May County residents that we are active and involved and they should be too.”
Later that evening, the group learned that a photo of their rally was featured on the Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC.
