Cape May County Democratic Chairman Brendan Sciarra announced March 22 that the county is postponing its scheduled June committee elections until 2021.
The announcement coincides with other decisions from counties throughout the state.
“The face-to-face interaction of candidates and voters in holding a county election for the nearly 250 committee seats would jeopardize public health and safety, as well as circumvent national, state and local efforts in combating the coronavirus,” Sciarra said.
After reviewing the New Jersey Democratic State Committee’s recommendation for the change, the Cape May County Regular Democratic Executive Committee held an emergency telephone conference call March 21 and unanimously agreed to postpone the elections.
“In this extraordinary world-wide crisis, our political responsibilities mandate that we take a proactive approach in helping to eradicate this deadly pandemic. Postponing this year’s county committee elections is clearly the right thing to do,” Sciarra concluded.
