Lions Club Run

By On Deck Staff

The Stone Harbor Lions Club will be holding its 20th 10K, 5K and 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 96th and First Avenue in Stone Harbor. Proceeds from the run will benefit the blind, sight impaired and the needy.
Awards of $250, $150 and $100 will be given to the first three male and female winners in each age category, as well as awards to the overall male and female finishers. The age groups include 14 and under, 15–19, and in 10-year groups up to 70 and over.
Board of Directors member and co-chairman for the race, Ed Einhaus, is looking forward to a large turnout.
“It’s usually one the leading races in South Jersey and this year we anticipate more than 700 runners and walkers,” Einhaus said.
The focus of the Lions Club in general is helping the sight- and hearing-impaired. Among charities supported by the club in the past include the Cape Region Medical Center, the Love of Linda and Volunteers in Medicine.
All net proceeds from the race go into the club’s general charity fund and the Board of Directors makes the final decision as to where the money will be donated, making sure both groups and individuals benefit. This year the club hopes to raise between $20,000 and $30,000.
The Stone Harbor Lions Club has been active in the community since 1952, and is one of the 48 Lions Clubs in the South Jersey area. Worldwide there are over 46,000 Lions Clubs and their mission statement is: “To create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation.”
To register for the race, go to the Women’s Civic Club on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. or register the morning of the race starting at 6-7:45 a.m. To register online visit www.active.com by Aug. 21.
