WILDWOOD CREST – Borough Commissioners voted to ceremonially rename a section of Miami Avenue after Eugene Miglio III, a Wildwood Crest police officer who died at that location 25 years ago.
While on duty, Miglio responded to a motor vehicle stop to assist another officer when he got into a struggle with one of the vehicle’s occupants. Miglio subsequently suffered a fatal heart attack.
“I never knew Gene, but, over the years, I feel like I have gotten to know him. Everything I’ve heard about him, I really wish I did get to meet him,” said Capt. Robert Lloyd, officer-in-charge, Wildwood Crest Police Department.
A ceremony is scheduled in July, involving Miglio’s family, unveiling the
“Miglio Way” sign and honoring the 25th anniversary of his death.
“It’s a time for everybody to get together and remember who he was. It’s therapeutic,” said Lloyd.
The police captain added that he wanted to thank the mayor and commissioners for honoring the officer in this way. He thinks it will allow future generations to learn about Miglio and get to know him, even without meeting him.
“It’s safe to say that this administration supports our police department very well – past, present and future – and we will continue to do so,” said Mayor Don Cabrera.
