State Ups Fee on Traffic Fines

By Vince Conti

STONE HARBOR – Stone Harbor Business Administrator Robert Smith informed Stone Harbor Borough Council June 16 about an increase in a state fee that will be levied on each fine or penalty imposed due to a violation of Title 39 – Motor Vehicles and Traffic Regulation. The increase from $2 to $3 is to be remitted to the state treasurer and deposited into the “New Jersey Forensic DNA Laboratory Fund.”
A May 15 memo from the acting administrator of the New Jersey Courts clarifies that the added levy is effective immediately. Municipal Court Title 39 violations involving “a guilty plea or finding” must be assessed the $3 DNA penalty, rather than $2.
Several other add–on fees are part of traffic-related penalties. There is a $1 fee for support of the Body Armor Replacement Fund, a $1 fee for the Spinal Cord Research Fund, a $1 fee for Autism Medical Research and Treatment Fund, and a $1 fee for the New Jersey Brain Injury Fund.
