Speed Limit Lowered to 40 mph on Bayshore Road

By Al Campbell

CREST HAVEN – In the wake of two teenage girls’ deaths in July on Bayshore Road in Green Creek, residents demanded freeholders take action to make the two-lane road safer.
At the Sept. 11 freeholder meeting, the board passed resolutions that will lower the speed limit on Bayshore Road, from Route 47 in Green Creek to Del Haven to 40 mph from 45 mph., the board modified the no-passing zone on Bayshore Road (CR 603). Residents said traffic speeds along the stretch of road causing many of them to fear for their lives and those of their family members.
There were no community members present at the meeting when the resolutions, which were additions to the agenda, unanimously passed.
The county stands to receive $150,000 from the Veterans Affairs to help upgrade the Veterans’ Cemetery. Director of Operations Edmund Grant said the VA will pay the county $700 per grave, and allows the county to go back two years for the sum.
Recently, Director Gerald Thornton, Grant, and several other county officials met with 19 veterans from American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and other groups to tell them of the planned upgrades at the Crest Haven Road final resting place of county veterans.
