ERMA – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA), Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWA) Sept. 20.
According to a release, the WEA test message will begin at 2:18 p.m. and the EAS message will be sent at 2:20 p.m.
The test will assess the readiness to distribute an emergency message nationwide and determine whether improvements are needed, according to a FEMA announcement sent out to local OEM offices.
Cape May County OEM Director Martin Pagliughi, stated, “Everyone that has a cell phone registered with the Cape May County CodeRED program will receive the Wireless Emergency Alert test call. The county’s system includes the option to receive nationwide alerts and warnings in addition to receiving county alerts.”
Cell towers will broadcast the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) Test for approximately 30 minutes. Cell phone should receive the message only once.
The WEA test message will be a Presidential Alert and will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
The Emergency Alert System (EAS) test message is distributed to radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers and wireline video providers message will be similar to the regular monthly EAS test messages that the public is familiar in which the message interrupts programming during an emergency weather report.
Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton, liaison to the Office of Emergency Management, stated, “Cape May County has made an investment to enhance safety and security measures for our citizens, the CodeRED program allows us to communicate with the public in the event of an emergency. Those registered will get messages through their cell phones, land lines and by email that will keep them informed of emergency warnings and alerts on local, state and federal levels. I encourage everyone to register with the County CodeRED system, go to the Cape May County OEM webpage at https://capemaycountynj.gov/149/Emergency-Management and click on the CodeRED banner and sign up to register for emergency notices.”
In the event of any unforeseen circumstances, such as a major weather event, the backup date for the IPAWS National Test is Oct. 3 at 2:20 p.m.
