SEA ISLE CITY – Sea Isle’s governing body authorized the execution of a deed notice, April 25, for an area of remediation near the city’s former Manufactured Gas Plant site, identified as portions of 39th Street, Central Avenue, and 40th Street.
The gas manufacturing plant operated in Sea Isle from the 1880s to the 1920s. Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) bought the former plant in 1926.
In October 2022, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities approved the sale of nine vacant lots that were once the site of the gas plant.
Cleanup activity for soil and groundwater allowed JCP&L to sell the almost 2-acre property to a developer planning a residential complex. The company also sold four homes on property adjacent to the site. The homes had been purchased by JCP&L after the discovery of the contamination.
A deed notice specifies the restrictions that transfer with the property. State remediation requirements for contaminated sites require an application to the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for a soil Remedial Action Plan, which, in turn, requires the Deed Notice.
The agreement grants JCP&L and DEP “access in perpetuity” to the designated portions of the property “in order to monitor engineering and institutional controls” and “conduct and complete the remediation.”
