Public Comment Limited

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – Cape May City Council voted Jan. 7 to adopt a protocol for public comment at council meetings. While public comment is allowed and encouraged, the protocol places a five-minute limit on remarks. The move was made in order to shorten overly long public meetings.
The protocol also calls on the public to be “civil and respectful” when making their comments. It reminds the public that council members are under no obligation to respond to questions.
The protocol means that Cape May has joined other communities in the county who have established formal rules and time limits for public comment, including Avalon and Ocean City. Other county towns, like Middle Township and Avalon’s neighbor, Stone Harbor, have seen no need for such restrictions.
