Post-Storm School Shelters Approved

CREST HAVEN – Before the start of the 2017 Hurricane Season (June 1), freeholders approved emergency shelter agreements with Middle and Upper townships’ board of educations in case of a disaster or “adverse weather event.”
Resolutions were passed April 11 and were a continuance of agreements first agreed to in 2013 by the boards. The agreements remain in force until Dec. 31, 2017.
In other actions the board:
* Approved an agreement between Fare Free Transportation and the county Division of Aging and Disability Services to distribute meals to home-bound “vulnerable elderly residents.”
* Awarded a contract to Premier Printing Solutions, LLC to furnish digital polling books to county Election Board.
* Authorized a $100,000 commercial fishing loan to Defiant Charters LLC from 1400 Ocean Drive, Avalon, to pay off a 45-foot back-bay pontoon boat. Security for the seven-year 2 percent loan is on a mortgage of the Fishing Vessel Miss Avalon and personal guarantee of Irvine Hurd.
* Declared an emergency due to cracks in underwater piling at Townsend’s Inlet Bridge, spotted by a diver who was checking as part of a regular inspection. The closure involves all vehicular traffic, but open to pedestrians and bicyclists. That closure results in lengthy detours for those who must travel from Sea Isle City to Avalon.
* Agreed to permit Sevenson Environmental Services Inc. to perform repair work on the 96th Street Bridge in Stone Harbor, since one of its vessels, doing dredging work in the borough, struck a bridge timber fender system Oct. 20, 2016. The firm is paying for the damage.
