Mobi-Mat Advocacy Pays Off

PETERSBURG – Elaine Holsomback, a Strathmere resident, has been arguing for more Mobi-Mats for many months. They ease traversing the sand to access the beach. She has appeared at several Upper Township Committee meetings to push for the mats saying “I’m here not only to help my husband, who uses a wheelchair, but for everyone, whether with strollers or carts or who simply want easier access to the beach.” At the Sept. 10 committee meeting, she again followed up on her request. Mayor Richard Palombo pledged, “We’ve looked into the cost of getting more Mobi-Mats on the beaches where we have lifeguards. The cost will be about $15,000-$20,000 for 100-foot mats at these locations. We’re putting this cost into the budget for next year, so the mats will be installed for summer 2019. We’re going to stay very flexible on where to put them; for example, Whale Beach has no official lifeguard stand, but if we can work around bird sanctuary regulations on that area of the beach we could consider doing something there as well. I’d also like to remind everyone that we have four wheelchairs for sand use that are an asset to utilize.”
