TRENTON – Vowing to fight for food security, tax relief and environmental protection, Matt Milam took the oath to join the New Jersey General Assembly Jan. 31, representing the First Legislative District in Cape May, Atlantic and Cumberland Counties.
The move followed the election of U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew to the House of Representatives, who had held the district’s Senate seat. Assemblyman Robert Andrzejczak was named to fill Van Drew’s Senate seat, and did so Jan. 15.
While Assemblyman Bruce Land continues as one of the district’s two representatives, the seat Andrzejczak held was vacant. A Democratic convention was held Jan. 29 in which committee members from Cape May, Cumberland and Atlantic counties voted to approve Milam for the post.
Andrzejczak noted it was Milam’s resignation from his Assembly seat that resulted in his entry into the Assembly. Now, it’s Andrzejczak’s upward movement that resulted in Milam returning to the district’s Assembly seat.
In a release, Milam stated, “I am so grateful to be able to be a part of this esteemed body again, and this is a responsibility I don’t take likely. I will do everything I can to improve the lives of my constituents, as serving the residents of Cape May, Atlantic and Cumberland counties is my greatest honor.”
Milam previously served in the General Assembly from 2008 to 2013. He served as chairman of the Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee and vice-chairman of the Assembly Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.
“I look forward to taking my expertise in business, management, and governance back to Trenton,” stated Milam. “I believe these are areas in which I will be able to excel in order to best serve the people of our great state.”
Aside from Milam’s past experience as a member of the General Assembly, he is a successful small-businessman, having served as chairman and CEO of Foundry Service Corporation, and Miles & Co., Inc. from 1979 to 2018.
Milam has also served as the vice-chairman of the Cumberland County Economic Development Board, national director for the American Foundry Society, which has over 10,000 members and has been on the Board of Directors for the Vineland YMCA, Bayshore Discovery Project and Spirit and Truth Ministries.
“This is an opportunity I am humbled to receive, and I am excited to roll my sleeves up get to work serving all the residents across New Jersey,” he concluded.
