COURT HOUSE – A resolution passed at the Oct. 5 meeting of the Middle Township Committee authorized a land sale for Nov. 30. The resolution lists 13 properties with minimum bid values ranging from $10,900 to $70,000.
Land sales involve property where ownership has reverted to the municipality. The township regularly conducts the sales in order to bring foreclosed property back on the tax rolls. The sales also avoid budget impacts that place a burden on all township property owners.
The sales have become controversial because a number of the properties frequently fall within Whitesboro or neighboring communities.
Community groups have expressed concern over what the sale of the properties may mean to the character of the community in the long run. A group of residents from Whitesboro challenged the land sale process at the township’s Aug. 15 meeting.
A review of the 13 properties listed in the resolution shows that more than half are in the Whitesboro-Burleigh area of the township.
