CAPE MAY — Following a year and a half of mediation, City Council approved new union contracts with United Auto Workers Local 2327 for Cape May Beach Patrol lifeguards and lieutenants July 22.
The contracts are retroactive to January 2007 and run through 2010.
Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr. said the ratified contracts would raise morale of the lifeguards.
Lifeguards and lieutenants will receive an annual $50 allowance for sunscreen and sunglasses retroactive to January 2007, said City Solicitor Tony Monzo. A $75 allowance was granted for physical exams for guards and lieutenants returning to work after an injury, also retroactive to 2007.
The contracts specify no overtime shall be paid to guard and lieutenants unless specifically authorized by a captain or their designated representative. Straight hourly rates will be paid up to the ninth hour of a workday and time and half following the ninth hour.
Lieutenants will receive $50 whenever they are authorized to take part in dive and search recovery operations.
Daily wages will range from a low of $134 for a first year lieutenant up to $161 for eight or more years of experience. Mid level wages average $147 per day. Daily wages will increase an average of $5 per day yearly through 2010.
Daily wages for lifeguards range from $81 for a first year employee to $111 for 10 or more years of experience. Mid level daily wages average $87.
Daily wages for guards will increase an average of $3 per day yearly through 2010.
