PETERSBURG – Upper Township Committee approved an ordinance March 25 that requires all new and modified commercial construction to have a “Knox box” available. Site plan waivers are available and existing properties are grandfathered under ordinance provisions.
A “Knox box” is a small, wall-mounted safe that holds building keys for emergency responders, such as police, fire departments, and medical services who prior have been given secure codes to access the boxes.
Mayor Richard Palombo noted, “These Knox Boxes can save lives and help avoid property damage. They’re also very popular with all types of emergency responders since it makes their job more efficient and rescue efforts more effective. Many commercial property owners in the township already have installed these boxes because it’s such a good idea and also could save owners money on their insurance.”
