Freeholder Actions: Red Cross Month Designated; OK Dennis Twp. Farmland Appraisal

Executive Director Carol Cohen of American Red Cross Southern Shore holds resolution with Veronica "Ronnie" Town

By AL CAMPBELL

CREST HAVEN – March was designated as Red Cross Month in Cape May County by a freeholder resolution March 12. A copy was then presented to Executive Director Carol Cohen of American Red Cross Southern Shore and Veronica “Ronnie” Town, “The face of Red Cross in Cape May County,” according to Cohen.
Cohen told the board that the Red Cross has instructed all shelter managers in first aid and Narcan administration for those with opioid overdoses. “There is Narcan in every shelter we run,” Cohen said.
The resolution recognized the 137-year-old organization that assists those whose homes have been burned or flooded, as well as collects blood at many local sites.
The resolution urged residents to observe the month and to “support this organization and its noble humanitarian mission.”
Farmland Preservation
In an unrelated action, the board approved a resolution on the application of DLB Holdings, LLC, 1985 Route 47, Dennis Township to sell the development easement of 338 acres through the Farmland Preservation Program. The resolution authorized two appraisals prior to any purchase.
In other actions the board:
* Reappointed Ron Denny and Thomas Tower to the Cape May County Park Advisory Board with terms expiring Dec. 31, 2022.
* Authorized aerial spraying operations by the Department of Mosquito Control deemed to be “mosquito breeding areas or areas harboring high populations of mosquitoes constituting either a nuisance, health hazard or both.”
* Agreed with the New Jersey Transit Corp. to accept $346,318 for the provision of accessible transportation to senior citizens “so they may obtain the necessities of life.”
* Accepted from Avalon, on behalf of the Office of Emergency Management, a 2007 Freightliner truck-cab and a 1989 Great Dane trailer no longer needed by the borough. The combination will be used as a pet shelter in times of emergency evacuations to enable owners to take their pets with them.
* Supported the 2020 U.S. Census “to ensure a complete and accurate population count.” Such a confidential census count is factored into many grants that the state and county receive.
