CAPE MAY – A project to evaluate inflow in Cape May’s sanitary sewer system uncovered an emergency condition relating to the sewer main along a stretch of Lafayette Street.
There was a concern that without emergency repairs, the system could face an “imminent failure.”
City Council approved two resolutions March 21, authorizing the repair work. One awarded an almost $2 million contract to Perna Finnigan Inc. for the sewer main replacement. The other was a not to exceed $170,000 award to DeBlasio & Associates for engineering work in support of the sewer project.
The contracts were awarded on an emergency basis without public advertisement for bids and a bidding process. The city manager did obtain competitive price quotes on an emergent basis.
The resolution states that Perna Finnigan will commence work as soon as a contract is authorized.
