COURT HOUSE – Two Superior Court judges, both from Dennis Township, and both who had been county chairs of the Republican and Democrat parties, were sworn April 6 by Assignment Judge Julio Mendez in the historic county courthouse.
Security was extra tight at the standing-room-only ceremony that was attended by a host of present and retired Superior Court judges.
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno attended and lauded both judges, Michael J. Donohue, a Republican, and James H. Pickering Jr., a Democrat.
Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1st) also addressed the new judges, both of whom were accompanied by their wives and families.
Pickering and Donohue are both Middle Township High School graduates. In their honor, a member of the school’s Middletones choral group, sang the national anthem and then the school’s song.
Joining Guadagno and Van Drew was Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton.
The room was filled with friends and political supporters who had been with Pickering and Donohue through many campaigns. Because of their appointment to the bench, they will no longer take part in politics.
