DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township Committee approved a resolution at its Aug. 8 meeting that provides for the specifications for construction of a bike path and parking area adjacent to the recreation complex.
The resolution also authorized the township to receive bids for the project which has a $200,000 budget.
Committee member Lisa Salimbene provided more information, “The walking/bike path is an extension of the existing bike path at the rec center.  It will connect at the existing opening near the soccer fields. There will be access to the path by way of Dennisville Road where there will be a small parking area, from Sunny Lane and Blue Heron Drive.”
She added that the project is being funded with county Open Space money.  Open Space officials wanted there to be access from neighborhoods to encourage walking to the path without having to walk on the street.
Township Engineer John “Jack” Gibson and Salimbene “Have been working on this plan for over two years,” she said.
“It’s hard to believe we could do anything to enhance the amenities at the Dennis Township rec center. This is just the beginning of developing this property adjacent to the complex. We are grateful to have the support of the recreation department, the parks and playground staff, the public and last but not least, the township committee,” she said.
Gibson provided further details by saying, “With county Open Space grants, the township is required to finance the project and is reimbursed by the Open Space Trust Fund upon satisfactory completion.”
The project includes in addition to the access path to Sunny Lane, a stone surface connection to the existing walking path at the Recreation Complex; a parking area off Dennisville Road (CR 628), with a paved connection to the bike path; a 10-foot wide paved bike/walking path; trees and landscaping; repairs to the existing perimeter security fencing; benches, bike racks and signage. Bids are scheduled to be received Sept. 7.
Salimbene indicated that in working with Gibson, they are committed to bringing the county bike path portion of a connecting trail to fruition for Dennis, summing up, “Jack and I are still hard at work getting the county bike path, also funded through Open Space, off the ground!”
