WILDWOOD CREST ─ Along the borough streets, a man ran as biting winds stung eyes and cheeks. Running encompasses many morning routines, but Commissioner Don Cabrera faced Jan. 3 with more than a brisk jog on his mind.
Cabrera joined the ranks of island leaders as the newly-appointed mayor of Wildwood Crest. First elected as commissioner in 2005, Cabrera served alongside former Mayor Carl Groon and Commissioner Joyce Gould. Cabrera forged his political trail.
Husband, father, businessman, and neighbor, Cabrera shouldered the mantle of mayor as leaders promised “transparency” and urged Crest citizens to “keep perspective.”
“I believe we must keep perspective,” said Cabrera, after taking the oath of office. “We (Crest) are small but great.”
Cabrera believes humility and perseverance will lead the way in 2018. Increase in new programs, recreational opportunities, and even “subtle changes” in how the borough conducts its business form the vanguard of Cabrera’s agenda.
“I have some old ideas I want to bring back,” Commissioner Joyce Gould said during statements. Though Gould also has new ideas as well, she is determined to maintain financial stability as commissioner of revenue and finance.
“I want to thank the women of revenue and finance,” Gould said, referring to the staff members of the department.
Joined by her husband Alan, Gould took the oath of office administered by Municipal Judge Louis Belasco.
Gould later commented this four-year term might be “my last” after 24 years of public service.
Gould has served the borough as commissioner and mayor, pouring time and energy into her many roles.
Though controversies have cast shadows over the borough, newly elected Commissioner David Thompson says he is “looking forward to doing this job.” Thompson described his love for the Crest and says he is “excited” for the future. A new face on the commission, Thompson will serve as director of public affairs and safety.
“It’s going to be a good year for Wildwood Crest,” Thompson concluded.
Another new face joined the professional panel: Solicitor Ronald J. Gelzunas. Gelzunas joins Administrator Constance Mahon and Engineer Marc DeBlasio, filling former solicitor Doreen Corino’s seat.
