COURT HOUSE – The public is invited to attend the official opening of the Pocket Park, May 28 at 1 p.m. on the northwest corner of the Cape May Court House Library, 30 W. Mechanic St.
According to a release, funded by a county Open Space grant, the park includes a walled outdoor classroom for library programs, a Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden, and a Woodland Area with shaded seating.
The park also serves as an educational showcase encouraging the use of plants native to New Jersey. The plants used have a multi-season interest, flowering during the spring, summer, and fall with berries, barks, and seed pods adding interest in the winter.
There are several benches, picnic tables, and cemented walkways between all areas. The public is welcome to stroll through the park and enjoy the plant life supplied by the Wildlife Gardener.
Former Library Director Deb Poillon said of the project: “Six small bronze sculptures of local animals are tucked in around the park so that children and adults can ‘find’ them, creating a sense of whimsy and imagination…The entire park is fenced to enhance the sense of a haven within town.”
Additional wireless hotspots have also been added, giving patrons internet access within the park.
Poillon oversaw the project to its completion shortly before her retirement in April.
The Cape May County Library operates branches in Cape May City, Lower Township, Wildwood Crest, Cape May Court House, Stone Harbor, Upper Township, Sea Isle City, and Woodbine.
The library has books, audio books, downloadable eBooks, video games, music, magazines, movies, and a bookmobile service with stops throughout the county every Thursday and Friday.
The library offers free internet, computers, printing, scanning, mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, and more.
