COURT HOUSE – APRIL 20: A 51-year-old woman, from Upper Township, and an 83-year-old man, from Lower Township, are the two latest fatalities in the county’s struggle with COVID-19. The death total now stands at 15.
The Cape May County Department of Health also reported six new confirmed cases, bringing the county’s total to 217, with 140 of those considered active cases. The total number of active cases fell by 13 individuals in today’s report. Also, the number of individuals removed from quarantine increased, from 45 to 62.
Today’s two deaths were the first fatalities reported since April 13. The first COVID-19 related death in the county occurred March 30, putting the county’s grim loss at 15 individuals in the past three weeks.
The 217 total confirmed cases are heavily weighted toward older community members.  Those over 65 years old comprise 30% of the cases, with individuals from 41-65 years old accounting for 42%. One-quarter of the cases are reported in people between 18-40 years old.  Those younger than 18 have only accounted for five confirmed cases, which is approximately 2%.
Today’s 51-year-old fatality is the youngest reported death from COVID-19 complications in the county.
