CREST HAVEN – May was declared “Older Americans Month” by freeholders May 10.
The resolution states that 27 percent of the county’s population is composed of individuals aged 60 and over.
The board urges that segment of the population to volunteer, mentor, become advocates and to share their skills to build and strengthen their communities.
Along similar lines, the board named Evelyn Cox and Robert McGeehan as Outstanding Seniors of the Year. They were presented awards at the annual senior jamboree at Avalon Community Hall, May 12.
Additionally, it honored the Parish Nurse Program, under auspices of Cape Regional Medical Center, as Outstanding Organization of the Year.
In other action the board:
Approved a $31,908 contract with Integrated Security and Communications for a video system upgrade at the Correctional Center. The present system is “So old it leaves us vulnerable to lawsuits,” commented Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton. There is not sufficient space in the system to backup data, Thornton said.
Authorized acquisition of 1.269 acres in Lower Township as part of the Open Space program. The parcel is 1649 Bayshore Road and will be purchased for $235,000.
The structure was built in 1724 and is 1,584 square feet.
Approved a contract for renovation of Lower Township Public Safety Building at the County Airport, Erma with Buell, Kratzer Powell. Later in the meeting, a hearing was held for a bond ordinance for $6.5 million to undertake the renovation of the building that will house the county’s Central Emergency Dispatch Center.
Lower Township Police Department will continue to utilize another portion of that building.
There was no comment on the bond from the public.
Approved a resolution to apply for a grant with U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development for a program at the County Airport.
The grant application will, if awarded, fund activities including conducting unmanned aerial system (drones) conditions research. It will also seek to enhance “entrepreneurial and innovative efforts in UAS related fields.
