ERMA – This Veterans Day, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m., Cape May County officials and veterans’ organizations will gather at Naval Air Station Wildwood, at the Cape May County Airport, to commemorate those who gave their lives for freedom and will also provide information to veterans.
Freeholder Jeffrey Pierson, a retired National Guard brigadier general, announced the change in venue at the Aug. 22 freeholder meeting.
Veterans’ organizations were informed of the change in ceremony location, he said.
Small American flags will be placed on each grave at the county Veterans Cemetery to mark the day, said Virginia Tomlin, director of the county Veterans Bureau.
While the hangar in which the ceremony is to be held may be chilly, it will be dry. In the past, some Veterans Day ceremonies have been held in the rain.
Tomlin told the Herald she had been in contact with veterans and asked for their input to make the event beneficial to them as well as to remember their fallen comrades.
Across the street from the hangar at the airport is the Forgotten Warriors Museum where a memorial wall lists the names of Cape May County’s Vietnam War casualties. The museum also has a display of memorabilia, boats, a helicopter and vehicles used in that Southeast Asian war.
Tomlin said American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars representatives are expected to have tables or displays in the hangar.
County Clerk Rita Fulginiti will be asked to explain the county’s discount card program available to veterans. That program is a local endeavor by volunteer merchants to give discounts to card-carrying veterans.
Additionally, Tomlin hopes to have a representative from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs speak about health care from the Philadelphia regional office as well as from the Wilmington VA Medical Center.
The county Health Department will also be represented.
Tomlin would especially like to involve young people at the event, perhaps Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, 4-H members and clubs, and the Civil Air Patrol.
Those with ideas or who wish to volunteer to participate that day should contact Tomlin at 886-2762.
