Cape May Schedules Hearing on Proposed Bike Path Expansion to Elementary School

By Press Release

CAPE MAY – The City of Cape May will hold a public information center at the Cape May Elementary School Gymnasium, 921 Lafayette St., Oct. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. to inform residents and businesses of the proposed Cape May Bikeway Expansion project in the city.

According to a release, the project received funds through the Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) Program which is a program established by the state Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Division of Local Aid using Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Improvements Program funds, with a purpose of enabling and encouraging more children to bicycle or walk to school by providing safer and more appealing routes.

The purpose of this meeting is to inform the public and solicit input and comments on the proposed improvements.

This meeting is open to all members of the public.

The City of Cape May, Cape May County, and the consulting design engineer will be available to answer questions.

Citizens are encouraged to actively participate by providing comments at the meeting, by mail or by email.

Project Benefits:

This project will provide pedestrian and bicycle improvements along Madison Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue for students traveling from the Coast Guard Training Center area and areas in between to the Cape May City Elementary School located on Lafayette Street.

Specific issues at Madison Avenue/Washington Street, Madison Avenue/Michigan Avenue and Pittsburg Avenue/Pennsylvania Avenue include non-compliant Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps, poorly placed detectable warning surface (DWS) and lack of pedestrian signals and push-buttons.

The route between the Coast Guard station and the elementary school lacks bicycle traffic signage and pavement markings and inadequate pedestrian signing. Improvements to the Lafayette Street and Madison Avenue intersection are being done under a separate project.

Estimated Schedule:

Estimated Start of Construction: Fall 2020

Estimated Completion of Construction: Spring 2021
