Bike Lanes on Promenade?

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – Cape May’s Seawall and Promenade Advisory Committee urged Cape May City Council Sept. 17 to consider bike lanes on the Promenade.
Acknowledging that the suggestion was not without its problems, the committee recommended moving bike traffic off of Beach Avenue and onto the Promenade. The report said that bicycles on the Promenade may represent the best of a limited set of solutions for safely accommodating bicycle traffic.
The committee also recommended enhancing the Promenade as an “attraction for pedestrians and bicyclists.” Committee members called for better maintenance of the dunes, and a plan for dealing with overgrown vegetation and trash that interfere with beach access ways.
A call for $370,000 in financial support was focused on a plan to “widen the Promenade from Arcade to Jackson,” allowing the suggested bike lanes and helping to provide the city with a wider, safer and prettier Promenade.
Committee members acknowledged that the report was directed largely at “getting bikes off of Beach Avenue.”
A longer report dealing with the need for raising and extending the seawall as a protection against rising water levels and more frequent, serious storms is forthcoming.
