STONE HARBOR — Former borough councilman Randall “Randy” Bauer, a retired educator, has his eye on the mayor’s chair. He filed his petition for the post on June 5, Primary Election day, as an independent under the banner “Stone Harbor Republican.”
Mayor Suzanne Walters won the party’s endorsement in that election. She ran as Cape May County Regular Republican Organization
Last week, Bauer sent notification of his intent to all registered voters in the borough.
“I feel that mayor and council have first responsibility to the people of the town. They should have a choice,” Bauer told the Herald.
Bauer said that he had promised, when he ran for council, that he would stay for two, three-year terms, if those were the voters’ wishes.
“I did that,” said Bauer, who has been out of office for the past two years.
“It is time to offer the people a choice,” he added. “We will go from there.”
Impressed by former U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley’s book, “We Can All Do Better,“ Bauer is making its theme his rallying cry, “It is time for us to put people ahead of politics.”
“The people deserve a government that is truly transparent. This town has a mayor, but nothing may happen without the council’s approval. The mayor has to be supportive of the people and should relay their concerns through the mayor,” he added.
When he was previously elected, Bauer ran as a regular Republican.
“I think the bottom line is, in the general election, the people will be able to weigh the concerns and the solutions I might have against those of the current mayor and make the decision,” Bauer said.
“I am very concerned that we put the people ahead of politics. The situation has been existing in Stone Harbor for 10 years now. There have been some conditions that have polarized the town. This town is much too small to have polarization. We need every person to be pulling for the town first. That’s one of the things I will be pushing in the next four months,” said Bauer.
