AVALON – At a work session June 14, Avalon Borough Council heard a report on borough efforts to implement nature-based shoreline stabilization improvements along a section of the Bay Park Marina.

The program adds natural resiliency projects to the overall marina revitalization effort.

The project will involve the use of nature-based devices like oyster castles and marine mattresses that protect the shoreline by serving as a natural breakwater.

Business Administrator Scott Wahl said the project gives the borough the opportunity to see how living shorelines can contribute to resiliency.

Wahl also added that the borough has been pursuing and will likely soon submit a grant proposal to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The proposal may be in the range of $1 million for support of the shoreline stabilization effort.
