Architect Reducing Scope of Convention Hall Plans

By Jack Fichter

CAPE MAY — City Council approved an amended agreement June 1 with architect Kimmel Bogrette for the proposed new Convention Hall here for $47,530 to produce specifications for a less expensive facility.
On March 30, City Council rejected all 11 bids submitted by construction companies to construct a new Convention Hall here. All exceeded the $10.5-million bond approved by voters in 2008.
Bids for the basic building ranged from $10.8 million to $12.1 million. Promenade reconstruction bids ranged from $300,000 to $1 million. Geothermal system bids ranged from $381,000 to $1.1 million.
The resolution approved Tuesday notes, “As a result of changes which are required in order to reduce the cost of the Project, additional architectural and engineering services are necessary and are outside the scope of work set forth in the Kimmel Bogrette Agreement.”
It notes a “Second Amended and Restated Agreement is hereby amended to authorize Kimmel Bogrette to provide additional architectural services on its behalf and through the third party consultants named therein in order to reduce the scope of work and cost of the Project as set forth in the bid documents and plans and specifications which have been advertised and are scheduled to be received and opened on June 3, 2010, including all services related to the rebid and potential award of a contract for the Project.”
The cost of the additional services breaks down to:
•Architectural: Kimmel Bogrette: $14,750
•Civil Engineering: Fralinger: $3,000.
• Mechanical Engineering: Gillan & Hartman: $23,350
• Structural Engineering: Klien & Hoffman: $3,680
• Landscape Architectural: Think Green: $500
• Audio Video Consulting: Acentech: $2,250
Bids will be opened June 3 at 1 p.m. in City Hall Auditorium.
